‘Crom Cruach’ / The Stooped One

'Crom Cruach' in my opinion is a very misunderstood character all together. I do realize that I've depicted him here with a skull for a head and flaming limbs but who is to say that's a bad thing! 'Crom' means bent or stooped over and 'cruach' means a stack of corn or wheat. 'Crom Cruach' was most certainly a pre-christian harvest god in Ireland and many of these symbols, such as fire and the bull are associated with harvest celebrations. Most early Irish texts were written by Christian monks, and so they described 'Cruach' as a demon who demanded human sacrifice, particularly children, until he was converted to Christianity by St Patrick. And yet we still have a harvest festival season at the beginning of August, called Lughnasa which has its roots firmly in pagan ritual. People to this day visit wells or make a pilgrimage during this time of year. Its interesting to note that the name Croagh Patrick which is a pilgrimage site in Co. Mayo, is 'Cruach Patrick' in Irish. Just Saying!

--------------------- About this Project ---------------------

I started this project to re-kindle my own relationship to the Irish language, a language I spent many years learning in school and now I want to share the passion I have with this language with others.
Every effort has been made to ensure the meaning, spelling and pronunciation of the Irish words are correct. The pronunciation is based on the Connacht dialect which I am familiar with.
The sounded out pronunciation is only a guideline to help with speaking the words. To hear examples of these words or for more research check out:
